Cherohala Quilters
Cherohala
Quilters was organized on September 26, 2007, in Robbinsville, North Carolina.
We are presently 25 members strong, many of whom are part-time residents of the
area. The only requirement to become a member is an interest in quilting.
Membership dues are $20.00/year ($10.00 for those on a fixed income such
as Social Security).
Our
regular guild meetings are held at the Robbinsville United Methodist Church
Fellowship Hall on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of each month beginning at 10:00am
(except during the winter when we meet only on the 1st Wednesday of the month).
Members come when they can to sew or just enjoy the company of kindred spirits.
We welcome new members of all experience levels. Our Quilts of Valor
participants gather on the 4th Friday of each month (except Nov. & Dec. when
we meet on the 3rd Friday) at Glenda Farley’s home beginning at 10:00am.
For a complete listing of our meeting schedule please click on the Meeting
Schedule link at the top of this web page.
In
our first year we held several mini-workshops at guild meetings, finished our
first opportunity quilt, started a Quilts of Valor Project and completed a dozen
quilts which have been donated to wounded service men & women, and presented
our first quilt exhibit at the Stecoah Valley Center during the fall Harvest
Festival.
Our
second year was just as busy. We continued to hold mini-workshops
throughout the year. Over a dozen more quilts have been completed
and donated to wounded war veterans through the Quilts of Valor project.
In addition, members have made walker bags that were donated to residents of
Britthaven, and burp cloths were made and donated to the Health Department to be
included in their baskets of supplies for new mothers of newborns. On
October 17th we presented our second quilt exhibit at the Stecoah Valley Center
Harvest Festival. The exhibit included traditional, contemporary, and art
quilts by members of the guild.
In
our third year we continued our community outreach and education activities.
We made and donated festive placemats to the Graham County Meals on
Wheels, hosted the local 4-H children for a pillowcase party, and donated our
second opportunity quilt to our local Dolly Parton Imagination Library Project
where it was raffled and raised over $600 to provide free books to preschoolers
in Graham County, North Carolina. Members
have also made two dozen sweet baby quilts to be donated to the Graham County
Health Department for newborns. Our
Quilts of Valor project continues to go strong, providing quilts to honor
wounded veterans of the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Cherohala Quilters’ third quilt exhibit was held at the Stecoah Valley
Center on October 16, 2010, during the Harvest Festival.
The exhibit included the beautiful work of our guild members in
traditional and contemporary styles, as well as a “bed turning” of antique
quilts.
Come
join us and see what our fourth year will bring!
